One pill won’t make a big difference. If you still think you have the infection, go back to your doc with a urine sample and he may prescribe another course of anti-biotics. I had to take four pills a day for a week and have just finished my second course, which finally cleared up the infection

I am a medical assistant in a OB/GYN doctors office. Kidney infection happens to us all the time. You should’ve taken the last pii. Normally after you’ve taken the last pill you have to go for a followup appt. to see if the infection is still there. If it is positive depending on the results more medication is required. If it’s just a small infection, you doctor will tell you what you need to do. If that doesn’t work then a urine culture is obtained and you would go from there. Kidney infections are sometimes cureable if treated right away.

They prescribe a certain amount of pills for a reason. Not good to medicate yourself or counter the doctor’s orders. You’re probably fine. I’d think he’d have sceduled you for a follow-up culture to make sure the infection was gone and not needing more meds.

If you’re really unsure, call him and ask his opinion on the matter

I think it’s OK even if you missed the last pill, most urinary tract infections are treated with a short course of antibiotics. You don’t need follow up if your symptoms have resolved (which is the most common thing to happen after treatment for a urinary infection). Go back to your doctor if you are still having symptoms or if he set up a follow up appointment, he may want to check something else besides the infection.

Hope it helps

Hi! I’m a nurse…here’s the answer…one pill at the end of your course of treatment is not a big deal, and it depends on your individual physician whether or not you need a follow up appointment or urine test…if you’re unsure, give the office a call…but if you still have symptoms (pain, fever, frequency), you should be seen right away…and in the future, take all of your medicine…when patients only take part of a prescription (I mean if you take your antibiotics incorrectly or only a portion of the course) you can develop resistant forms of the organism…hope you’re feeling better! :)

What was the infection, who gave you the medication.Doctors usually write it on the prescription.
If you have the prescription take it to the drug store and show it to him, tell him what you have done.
He might advise you what to do.

i think you will be okay but i advise going in for a follow up anyway just to make sure it cleared up. i had a kidney infection a couple months ago and the doctor prescribed me an antibiotic and i finished them all but three weeks later it came back worse and i went to the doctor again and turns out they didnt give me strong enough antibiotics the first time. so be safe and just go for the follow up.
