They say not to do anything and that it will resolve itself within 2 weeks. I’d talk to your doctor in the morning though. You can also go to medline plus. That has all the info you’ll need.
My son had it I believe I cleaned his tongue after his bottle, If I remember correctly, you can use stirle guase and clean his tongue. Just unitl you get him to the doctor.
Thrush is a form of yeast…antibiotics won’t cure it…it would actually make it worse. You can tell if its thrush because the baby have a thick white coating in his/her mouth that ISN’T milk or formula and it can’t be wiped off. The only real cure is the medication (Nystatin Suspension) that your pediatrician will provide. You can try rubbing a little yogurt in his mouth, but get (I think it’s called) Yo Baby…Babies aren’t supposed to eat yogurt at this age yet but that’s the only remedy that I’ve heard of that gets rid of yeast infections in women. Other than that…I don’t know…Thrush becomes very painful for your little one (just think of how you feel during a yeast infection) You can ease the pain (if he/she is in pain) with a dose of tylenol or motrin until morning…but definitely get your babe to the doc first thing..this can spread down the throat and WILl NOT go away on its own….Good luck…
I would give a call to your dr office and have the on call physician call you back. I have heard that this is very painful for the baby. Good luck
None that will get rid of it immediatly… but Thrush is too much yeast in your (if your brestfeeding) or his/her system.
Get a cup of warm water and put in a tablespoon on vinager and treat your nipples (if your breastfeeding) every 20 minutes to a half hour with that solution or the nipples on the bottles after every feeding … It will help dilute the yeast.
If you are breastfeeding…. change your diet NOW. No sugars, sodas, alcohol or breads which is a main factor in causing it. Both my son and I had Thrush from breastfeeding… I cut out sodas and it was gone in 2 days.
Since he/she is 4 months, there is nothing you can saftely give him/her for now. Tylenol can ease the pain for the night til you can get something in the morning.
I had Thrush with both my kids and know all the answers. If you need to know anything else… like over the counter medicines or whatever, e-mail me at undertablendreaming@yahoo.com and I’ll be happy to help.
OK, the only things that cure thrush you would need to go to a pharmacy for, so you’re going to have to wait until the morning or go to the hospital. Nystatin is the most common medicine they prescribe. If it was your nipples, you could use lotrimin on it, but I don’t think you can use this in your baby’s mouth. There is something blue they sell that is supposed to be a homeopathic remedy, but again, you’d have to get it at a drug store. It’s the active cultures in yogurt that help with thrush but I don’t believe it will cure thrush, just complement any drug therapies.
Is your child showing signs of pain? If not, just call your doctor in the morning. Thrush isn’t supposed to bother them (at least that’s what I was told — it’s killer for a breastfeeding mom though so who knows) so it would be perfectly fine to wait until the morning to call. If you’re really worried, call the office. Most peds have a doctor on call at night and he/she would be best equipped to advise you on how to proceed.
Good luck.

If you are breastfeeding be sure to treat yourself as well!
my son also has thrush, for about a month now. i was prescribed nystatin for him but its not really that effective. i was advised today by his pediatrician today to try canesten cream on the inside of his mouth because you can rub it directly where you see the thrush. its basically a yeast killing cream that the box lists for athletes foot and jock itch. once you can get a prescription for nystatin, she advised me to “treat” all nipples with it, meaning just dip them in it after they’ve been sterilized and let them air dry before giving it to your baby.
we rubbed our little one’s gums gently with a sterile gauze pad after every bottle. it worked really well!
You can rub yogurt in your babies mouth. When my youngest was born, her sister had gotten thrush some how and gave it to her. I didn’t think that we would ever get rid of it because it is so contagious. The Dr. will probably give you Nystatin which will take forever to work. You can try yogurt or straight Acidophiles because yogurt has that along with other natural cultures that will fight the yeast faster.
You also need to throw out ALL pacifiers and boil all bottle nipples and if you breast feed you need to clean your nipples before and after every feeding to help you from giving it back and forth. Its a pain to get rid of but if you are consistent in treatment it will go much faster! Good Luck
my son had thrush around 4 weeks ago.
the doc gave him some medicine that we had to rub around in his mouth twice a day…..
keep your nipples as dry as you can-switch out your breast pads often
it is hard to kill the yeast on all of his passy’s, bottles, or whatever else his mouth touches–while he still is infected, sterilize everything daily (including a breast pump if you do that)
then after his medicine dose is done and the baby is cleared up, THROW EVERYTHING AWAY and get all new things. i know this is aggrivating, but its not worth taking the chance on the cycle starting over
and i’ve heard that once you get thrush it tends to come back (we’ve been lucky so far)
so to help prevent this, sterilize everything weekly ….. swab out the babies mouth twice a day with peroxide and even rub a very little bit on your nipples.
also call your ob and tell them you need to get an anti fungal for your nipples -not only does your baby need to be treated, but so do you because you will pass it back and forth-
i know this isn’t much help for tonight, but there’s really not much you can do until the morning….maybe try some infant tylenol to hold the baby over
hope this helps!!
You have to get the nystatin antifungal from the doc. yogurt can inhibit the growth, but you really need the medicine. It may just look yucky, but it can be painful for baby if left alone.
Make sure to disinfect all bottles, nipples, etc to prevent reinfestation.
Buy a really good acidophillus and take the recommended dosage. Also take apart a capsule and mix some of the powder with lanolin. Put the lanolin mixture on your nipples before AND after you nurse. Do this every time you nurse until it goes away. Also put the mixture on your child’s pacifier if he/she uses one. This won’t help you tonight if you don’t have these but I had thrush with two out of three of my kids and this is the only thing that worked.
