Investigational Device for Patients With Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Posted by admin in June 26th 2008

Most patients facing surgery to correct a painful spinal condition are usually a bit apprehensive. Not so for 70-year-old Marveen Boone of Chase, Louisiana, who will become the first patient in the United States to surgically receive a new investigational device. The VertiFlex Superion Interspinous Spacer is a small spacing device for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). LSS is a common and debilitating problem for people over age 50.

Boone’s surgery will be performed at the Spine Institute of Louisiana in Shreveport on Thursday, June 26, 2008. Spine surgeon, Pierce D. Nunley, M.D., will be the first surgeon in the United States to implant the new device in a research study. Dr. Nunley states: “The instrumentation developed by VertiFlex allows patients only a small scar and a quicker recovery. It integrates a minimally invasive technique that seeks to preserve all the normal anatomical structures of the spine. This is a good option for patients that would potentially be candidates for traditional fusion – a more invasive procedure.”

Scotsmen Set Out to Raise Awareness of Rare Syndrome on a Journey Across America

Posted by admin in June 25th 2008

The Scots have been known for centuries to be able to make the impossible happen. From Robert the Bruce to William Wallace, facing the challenge and winning is the only option. So when you get two good friends having a late night dram of The Glenlivet single malt scotch in a pub and they have a cause and want an answer, there is only one thing to do. “Why don’t we ride across America on motorbikes,” says one and the other replies, “In kilts!”

“If you are going to do an event that is going to have an impact on the way many people live their lives worldwide then you need to make it big,” says Colin Davidson Read, one of the two brave hearts to embark across the vastness of America. “So where else should we do this ride than the largest and friendliest country on earth, the United States? We are looking for the biggest possible send off from our Celtic cousins across the pond and I know that they won’t let us down.”

Nerve Cells Derived from Embryonic Stem Cells and Transplanted into Mice May Lead to Improved Brain Treatments

Posted by admin in June 25th 2008

Scientists at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research have, for the first time, genetically programmed embryonic stem (ES) cells to become nerve cells when transplanted into the brain, according to a study published today in The Journal of Neuroscience. The research, an important step toward developing new treatments for stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions, showed that mice afflicted by stroke showed tangible therapeutic improvement following transplantation of these cells. None of the mice formed tumors, which had been a major setback in prior attempts at stem cell transplantation.

Advantage Medical Devices Receives FDA Clearance for VantageCath

Posted by admin in May 5th 2008

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared for marketing a new safety engineered short-term peripheral Intra-Venous (IV) Catheter. The product, VantageCath, is designed to significantly reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens during the placement of the catheter and also provide the clinician with desirable feature sets.

Existing safety engineered peripheral IVs have mechanisms to protect the needle that has been contaminated but do not usually address the problem of blood leaking out of an open hub. The VantageCath utilizes a closed-hub system that eliminates the need to tamponade above the site while connecting tubing or saline lock.
